방탄소년단이 미국 뉴욕 유엔본부 신탁통치이사회 회의장(Trusteeship Council Chamber)에서 열린 유엔아동기금(UNICEF)의 청년 어젠다 '제너레이션 언리미티드(Generation Unlimited)' 발표 행사에 참석했다.
<다음은 방탄소년단 RM이 대표로 한 유엔연설 전문이다.>
존경하는 UN 사무총장님, UNICEF 총재님, 세계 각국의 정상 분들과 귀빈 여러분, 감사합니다. 저는 그룹 방탄소년단의 리더 RM으로도 알려진, 김남준 입니다. 오늘 젊은 세대들을 위한 의미 있는 자리에 초대받게 되어 대단히 영광입니다.
작년 11월 방탄소년단은 “진정한 사랑은 나 자신을 사랑하는 것에서 시작한다”는 믿음을 바탕으로 LOVE MYSELF 캠페인을 유니세프와 함께 시작했습니다. 전 세계 어린이와 청소년들을 폭력으로부터 보호하는 #ENDviolence 프로그램도 유니세프와 함께 해오고 있습니다. 우리 팬들은 행동과 열정으로 우리와 캠페인에 함께 해주고 계십니다. 진심으로 세상에서 가장 멋진 팬들이십니다!
저는 오늘 저에 대한 이야기로 시작하려 합니다 저는 대한민국 서울 근교에 위치한 일산이라는 도시에서 태어났습니다. 그곳은 호수와 산이 있고, 해마다 꽃 축제가 열리는 아름다운 곳입니다. 그곳에서 행복한 어린 시절을 보냈고, 저는 그저 평범한 소년이었습니다. 두근거리는 가슴을 안고 밤하늘을 올려다보고, 소년의 꿈을 꾸기도 했습니다. 세상을 구할 수 있는 영웅이 되는 상상을 하곤 했습니다.
저희 초기 앨범 인트로 중 ‘아홉, 열살 쯤 내 심장은 멈췄다’는 가사가 있습니다. 돌이켜보면, 그 때쯤이 처음으로 다른 사람의 시선을 의식하고, 다른 사람의 시선으로 나를 보게 된 때가 아닌가 싶습니다. 그 때 이후 저는 점차 밤하늘과 별들을 올려다 보지도 않게 됐고, 쓸데없는 상상을 하지도 않게 되었습니다. 그보다는 누군가가 만들어 놓은 틀에 저를 끼워 맞추는데 급급했습니다. 얼마 지나지 않아 내 목소리를 잃어 버리고, 다른 사람의 목소리를 듣기 시작했습니다. 아무도 내 이름을 불러주지 않았고, 저 스스로도 그랬습니다. 심장은 멈췄고 시선은 닫혔습니다. 그렇게 저는, 우리는 이름을 잃어 버렸고 유령이 되었습니다.
하지만 제게는 하나의 안식처가 있었습니다. 바로 음악이었습니다. 제 안에 작은 목소리가 들렸습니다. ‘깨어나, 남준. 너 자신한테 귀를 기울여!” 그러나 음악이 제 진짜 이름을 부르는 것을 듣는데 까지는 오랜 시간이 걸렸습니다. 막상 방탄소년단에 합류하기로 결심한 이후에도 많은 난관이 있었습니다. 못 믿는 분들도 계시겠지만, 대다수의 사람들은 우리가 희망이 없다고 생각했습니다. 때때로 그저 포기하고 싶었습니다.
하지만 제가 모든 것을 포기하지 않은 것은 정말 행운이라고 생각합니다 저는, 그리고 우리는, 앞으로도 이렇게 넘어지고 휘청거릴 겁니다. 방탄소년단은 지금 대규모 스타디움에서 공연을 하고 수백만 장의 앨범을 파는 아티스트가 되었지만, 여전히 저는 스물네 살의 평범한 청년입니다. 제가 성취한 것이 있다면, 이는 바로 곁에 멤버들이 있어주었고, 그리고 전세계 ARMY 분들이 저희를 위해 사랑과 성원을 보내주었기에 가능했던 것입니다.
어제 실수 했더라도 어제의 나도 나이고, 오늘의 부족하고 실수하는 나도 나입니다. 내일의 좀 더 현명해 질 수 있는 나도 나일 것입니다. 이런 내 실수와 잘못들 모두 나이며, 내 삶의 별자리의 가장 밝은 별무리입니다. 저는 오늘의 나이든, 어제의 나이든, 앞으로 되고 싶은 나이든, 제 자신을 사랑하게 되었습니다
마지막으로 한가지만 더 말씀드리고 싶습니다. LOVE YOURSELF 앨범을 발매하고, LOVE MYSELF 캠페인을 시작한 후 우리는 전세계 팬들로부터 믿지 못할 이야기들을 들었습니다. 우리의 메시지가 그들이 삶의 어려움을 극복하고 그들 자신을 사랑하게 되는데 어떤 도움이 되었는지를요. 그런 이야기들은 우리의 책임감을 계속해서 상기시킵니다.

My name is Kim Namjoon, also known as RM, the leader of the group BTS. It is an incredible honor to be invited to an occasion with such significance for today's young generation.
Last November, BTS launched the Love Myself campaign with UNICEF built on our belief that true love first begins with loving myself. We've been partnering with UNICEF's End Violence program to protect children and young people all over the world from violence. And our fans have become a major part of this campaign with their action and with their enthusiasm. We truly have the best fans in the world.
I’d like to begin by talking about myself.
I was born in Ilsan, a city near Seoul, South Korea. It is a really beautiful place with a lake, hills, and even an annual flower festival. I spent a very happy childhood there, and I was just an ordinary boy. I used to look up at the night sky and wonder, and I used to dream the dreams of a boy. I used to imagine that I was a super hero who could save the world.
In an intro to one of our early albums, there’s a line that says,
‘My heart stopped when I was maybe nine or ten.’
Looking back, I think that’s when I began to worry about what other people thought of me, and started seeing myself through their eyes. I stopped looking up at the night skies, the stars. I stopped daydreaming. Instead, I just tried to jam myself into the molds that other people made. Soon, I began to shut out my own voice, and started to listen to the voices of others. No one called out my name, and neither did I. My heart stopped, and my eyes closed shut.
So, like this, I, we, all lost our names. We became like ghosts.
But I had one sensory, and that was music.
There was a small voice inside of me that said, ‘Wake up, man, and listen to yourself.’ But it took me a long time to hear music calling my real name. Even after making the decision to join BTS, there were a lot of hurdles. Some people may not believe, but most people thought we were hopeless. Sometimes I just wanted to quit. But I think I was very lucky that I didn’t give it all up.
And I’m sure that I, and we, will keep stumbling and falling like this.
BTS has become artists performing in those huge stadiums and selling millions of albums right now, but I am still an ordinary 24-year-old guy. If there’s anything that I achieved, it was only possible that I have my other BTS members right by my side, and because of the love and support that our ARMY fans all over the world make for us.
And maybe I made a mistake yesterday, but yesterday’s me is still me. Today, I am who I am with all of my faults and my mistakes. Tomorrow, I might be a tiny bit wiser, and that’ll be me too. These faults and mistakes are what I am, making up the brightest stars in the constellation of my life. I have come to love myself for who I am, for who I was, and for who I hope to become.
I’d like to say one last thing: After releasing our Love Yourself albums and launching the ‘Love Myself’ campaign, we started to hear remarkable stories from our fans all over the world. How our message helped them overcome their hardships in life and start loving themselves. Those stories constantly remind us of our responsibility.
So let’s take all one more step.
We have learned to love ourselves, so now I urge you to speak yourself.
